Three Special Events Planned for 32nd Annual Tokyo Motor Show
"Great Cars in Memorable Movies" in the Theme Hall,
A TechnoGallery, and an Exhibit of Children's Car Drawings

The 32nd Annual Tokyo Motor Show, organized by JMIF (Chair: Yoshifumi Tsuji), will be held from October 24 at the Nippon Convention Center (Makuhari Messe) in Makuhari, Chiba prefecture. The show will feature several special events, including a thematic exhibit called "Great Cars in Memorable Movies." Furthermore, on the second floor of the New North Hall will be a technology-oriented exhibit known as the TechnoGallery, with information on fundamental automotive technology and exhibits on "Keys to Car Knowledge: The Quest for Enhanced Fuel Performance." On the second floor of the International Exhibition Hall there will also be an exhibit of drawings of cars done by children. The special events featured at each show have been extremely popular in the past, becoming "must-see" exhibits for many participants.

Thematic exhibit: "Great Cars in Memorable Movies"

The thematic exhibit is seen this year as an extension of the show's overall theme of the connection between people and cars. Using the most popular form of media, films, we will draw on the connection between this cultural expression and concepts like cars and people, cars and our lifestyles, and cars and society.
Nineteen U.S. and European cars from a number of local automobile museums will be on display, some of them dating from the 1910s. The exhibit will emphasize the connection with automobile museums throughout Japan.

The Jaguar XK120 Roadster (on loan from the Toyota Museum) from the film "The Last Time I Saw Paris" will be on display, as will the Ford Model A Roadster (on loan from the Yamanakako Takamura Museum of Art) from the film "Bonnie and Clyde" and the Fiat 500A Topporino (on loan from the Japan Automobile Museum) from "Roman Holiday." Cars identical to those used in what can only be referred to as screen classics will be on the floor for viewing.

There are 31 other cars that cannot be displayed at this time, including one from the film "The Great Escape," but there will be an area featuring posters, film clips and stills, as well as an area where the use of cars in films is explained. This will be a great exhibit for both movie and car fans.

Fundamental Automotive Technology, the TechnoGallery

The TechnoGallery, as its name suggests, looks at cars from a technological angle. This year's theme will look at the ways technology is used to improve fuel consumption efficiency.
Taking a look at the various technologies introduced to improve fuel consumption efficiency up to December 1996, including engine design, transmission improvements, and reduced air resistance, engines and other automotive parts developed by Japanese automotive manufacturers will be on display.

Among the engines on display will be the direct injection system engine, the lean burn engine, the variable valve timing engine and the diesel engine.
Easy-to-understand explanations of the methods used to improve fuel consumption efficiency, including the lightening of the car body and tire improvements, will be on display as well.

In a special corner dedicated to fuel conservation, consumer knowledge will be gauged, and information will be available on how the environment is helped by improving fuel consumption efficiency. The exhibit will be on the second floor of the North Hall.

The Exhibit of Children's Car Drawings

This is the fifth year for this exhibit, which began with the 28th motor show, when the venue was moved to Makuhari Messe. With the cooperation of both Chiba Prefecture and Chiba City, as well as municipal kindergartens, we are able to offer an exhibit of drawings done by 5-year-olds from Chiba City. Themes this year will include children's images of their own cars and family cars. We are expecting to receive 3,000 submissions (up from 2,663 last year),

all of which will be on display in the Central Mall area and the Central Entrance area.
