JAMA Welcomes Decision on Starting Process for Negotiations on a Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement

Toshiyuki Shiga, Chairman, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.

JAMA welcomes the decision reached at the 20th EU-Japan Summit held in Brussels on 28 May 2011 to start the process for negotiations on a free trade/economic partnership agreement between Japan and the European Union.  JAMA takes this opportunity to express its deep appreciation to the Japanese government representatives concerned for their efforts in bringing the discussions to their present stage.

The Japanese automobile industry’s longstanding presence in Europe reflects its significant investment in the region over many years.  JAMA anticipates that a Japan-EU economic partnership agreement will enhance trade and investment between Japan and the EU and thereby promote further development of the auto industry on both sides.

JAMA has high expectations for the Japanese government’s continuing efforts aimed at an early conclusion of the Japan-EU negotiations on such an agreement.
