FAMI Annual General Meeting in Japan Announces the Launch of a Three-Year Road Safety Program

The Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industries (FAMI) held its annual general meeting for the first time in Japan in Hamamatsu, from March 4 to 6, hosted by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

FAMI, based in Singapore, represents the motorcycle industry in India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan. It was established in January 1999 to address common issues for the development of the motorcycle industry in its member countries and in the Asian region. JAMA has been an active member of FAMI since its inception.

Asia today leads the world in terms of motorcycle production and sales and the motorcycle industry itself occupies a key role in individual Asian economies. At the same time, of course, road traffic safety in the region has become a pressing public issue requiring corrective action.

Against this backdrop, FAMI members agreed at the Hamamatsu meeting to launch this important Asian road safety program. JAMA will lend its support to the program on the basis of its long experience in road safety promotion in Japan.

The FAMI program will task the motorcycle manufacturers concerned with educating motorcycle users on safe driving, collecting statistics on traffic accidents, and incorporating even more safety technologies into the vehicles they produce. JAMA believes the program will make a vital contribution to increased traffic safety in the countries represented by FAMI's membership.

March 6, 2003

The Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industries (FAMI) agreed to launch the first multilateral three-year program for road safety at its annual general meeting held in Hamamatsu today.

The program assigns the motorcycle manufacturers' associations in the FAMI member economies the task of educating motorcycle users on safe driving; of compiling statistics on traffic accidents; and of promoting the incorporation of additional safety technologies into motorcycles.

The motorcycle industry today plays a key role in Asian economies. In fact, Asia is now the world leader in motorcycle production and sales, dramatically underscoring the need to develop a better road traffic environment in the region.
