JAMA Publishes Report on Japanese Automakers’ North American Activities in 2005

The North American office of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (under the chairmanship of Mr Fujio Cho) recently published a pamphlet entitled Japanese Automakers in America: New Plants, New Jobs, New Vehicles, which summarizes JAMA member manufacturers’ employment, investment and production activities in the United States and is being distributed to a wide range of parties, including the U.S. Congress, government agencies and the media.

The contents of this pamphlet can be viewed on and downloaded from the Web site of JAMA’s North American office (www.jama.org), and key statistical data are summarized here.

1. Overview of the employment, investment and production activities of Japanese automakers in the U.S. in 2005:

  • JAMA member manufacturers’ U.S. operations employed 431,738 Americans nationwide (up 2.1% over the previous year).
    -Their 25 auto-manufacturing plants in the U.S. employed 57,370 Americans.
    -Their 36 R&D facilities in the U.S. employed 3,953 Americans.
    -Their dealer and distributor networks in the U.S. employed 370,775 Americans.
  • JAMA member manufacturers’ cumulative investment in the U.S. in the automotive sector totaled US$ 28 billion (up US$ 0.77 billion from 2004).
  • JAMA member manufacturers’ North American production accounted for 68% of the total number of vehicles sold by Japanese automakers in the U.S.

2. Actual value of U.S.-made parts purchases by Japanese automakers in 2005 (for the Japanese fiscal year April 1, 2005-March 31, 2006):

  • JAMA member manufacturers’ purchasing of U.S.-manufactured parts posted an all-time high, reaching a total value of US$ 48.4 billion (up 7.1% over 2004).
