JAMA-Organized Public Verification Testing of Automated Driving to Be Conducted in 2020
Presenting real-world examples of future mobility, which aims for zero road accidents and optimally efficient mobility through the use of cutting-edge technologies, ten JAMA member companies, using about 80 vehicles, will take part in the testing; demonstration rides will also be held.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. will conduct public verification testing of automated driving from July 6 through July 12, 2020, ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, to provide the opportunity for public observation of automated vehicle operation ensuring safe, efficient, and comfortable road transport.

Ten JAMA member companies (Daihatsu Motor Co., Hino Motors, Honda Motor Co., Mazda Motor Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Nissan Motor Co., Subaru Corporation, Suzuki Motor Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation and Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd.) will participate in the testing.

JAMA Chairman Akio Toyoda has said, “It is the common aim of all automakers to achieve, through automated driving, a society with zero road accidents in which efficient and enjoyable mobility is available to everyone. With regard to automated driving testing, JAMA will spearhead cooperation and coordination efforts, including in the area of vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, and the automobile industry will work in a unified way in the promotion of such testing. I hope that people from around the world will become acquainted with Japan’s advanced mobility technology in 2020, when the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held, and as a result heighten their expectations for mobility’s future.”

The JAMA-organized automated driving verification testing will be implemented in coordination with verification testing conducted for the automated driving project (targeting systems and services expansion) under Japan’s Cross-Ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP),*1 an initiative involving the joint efforts of industry, government, and academia. Automated driving technologies are being advanced by JAMA member manufacturers, in a “national team” spirit, on the basis of such cooperation.

*1 Following a governmental Growth Strategy Council meeting on March 30, 2018 on “Investing for the Future,” the organization of real-world automated driving verification testing activities (in a separate initiative from the JAMA-organized verification testing to be held in July 2020) was launched under the SIP automated driving project, in cooperation with relevant authorities including central government ministries and agencies and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. That initiative will involve the participation of domestic and foreign automakers, universities, research institutes and other stakeholders in verification tests that will begin in autumn 2019. The overall SIP project aims to expedite technology development, evaluate research and development results and identify problems, carry out feasibility studies, spearhead global cooperation and coordination, and promote social receptivity.

*2 SAE J3016 Level 2: Partial automation (automated driving functions/systems in use).

SAE J3016 Level 4: High automation (self-driving); however, to ensure safety, drivers will be on board the test vehicles for the duration of the tests and demonstration rides.
