JAMA Chairman’s Comment on the Kumamoto Earthquake

Koji SATO, Chairman
Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc.

On behalf of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association and all of its members, I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the earthquake centered in Kumamoto Prefecture that occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on July 28. We also extend our deepest sympathy to everyone affected by this disaster.

Although aftershocks continue and conditions remain extremely challenging, we pray for the safety of the people in, and for the earliest possible recovery and reconstruction of, the areas impacted by the earthquake.

The automotive industry has also been significantly affected, with many of our colleagues, including dealers and suppliers, suffering damage from the disaster. To help ensure the safety and well-being of the 5.5 million people involved in Japan’s automotive industry, we will respond to this situation with the full commitment and unity of the entire industry.

We will place the highest priority on saving lives and restoring local communities. Working closely with the government, local authorities, and other organizations concerned, we will continue to assess conditions and needs on the ground firsthand and provide critical support in implementing the measures required to help those affected return to their daily lives as quickly as possible.
