OICA Dialogue on “The Future Mobility Vision and Challenges”

On October 31, coinciding with the Japan Mobility Show 2025, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) hosted a dialogue on “The Future Mobility Vision and Challenges.” The dialogue brought together representatives from the automobile manufacturers’ associations of the United States, India, Italy, and South Korea, which are also Council Members of OICA (the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers), a body that certifies international auto shows and works on the harmonization of vehicle technical standards. As the host, JAMA welcomed over 100 guests at the event. The dialogue concluded successfully, and we wish to extend our sincere gratitude to all who attended.

During the dialogue, JAMA Chairman Mr Masanori Katayama delivered a keynote speech on the JAMA-produced document titled “JAMA Vision 2035.” Explaining the background and ideas behind the creation of the vision, he stressed the importance of pursuing both Green Transformation (GX) and Digital Transformation (DX) in order to make this vision of future society a reality.

A panel discussion moderated by JAMA President Mr Akira Matsunaga followed the keynote speech. The panelists profiled the current status of and challenges related to GX and DX in their respective countries and discussed their expectations in regard to OICA’s potential roles in that context.

The discussion highlighted the fact that while specific circumstances and conditions vary from country to country, GX and DX are common challenges not only for individual countries including Japan but for the global automotive industry as a whole. Panel participants affirmed that specifications and standards related to these two topics must be addressed as areas requiring cooperation in the automotive industry and other sectors as well as among governments.

OICA’s longstanding promotion of automotive technical standards harmonization under the auspices of the United Nations has contributed to timely rulemaking and the advancement of the global automotive industry. With the industry today undergoing a once-in-a-century transformation, enhanced collaboration among national automobile manufacturers’ associations is essential to the resolution of the numerous and wide-ranging challenges involved, including GX and DX.

The dialogue’s main takeaway, for the panelists as well as for the audience, was the confirmation of the expanding importance of OICA now and in the years ahead. At JAMA, we look forward to deepening our discussions under the OICA framework on the challenges facing the global automotive industry and continuing to proactively contribute as an OICA member to its ongoing and future activities in this regard.
